A Tunnel Through the Wall
Situation
Learning can happen across thousands of kilometers when there is a communication channel.
For Leo, that channel is Slack.
Donald has been tutoring Leo remotely, but Slack login has become an unexpected obstacle. This is not merely a software inconvenience. Slack is the place where Donald and his learners can share code, screenshots, questions, experiments, and unfinished thoughts—the everyday infrastructure of their learning relationship.
And Leo is the first learner in mainland China for whom Donald has not yet managed to make Slack work.
Turning Point
The second weekend attempt is coming.
Donald has prepared two possible paths.
The first uses the Gmail account he previously created for Leo. Slack rejected it with a message saying that the email address was already being used by another user.
The second uses another Gmail address that Slack has never seen before.
If both paths fail, Donald has reached the edge of what he currently knows how to try.
That is when the problem changes.
Instead of asking only, “What can I do from Toronto?” Donald asks Qing to help investigate from inside China's developer community.
Qing is Leo's dad, Fish's and Jiang's close friend, and—together with Jiang—an experienced developer in China.
Perhaps someone in their professional network already knows how programmers in mainland China are currently using Slack.
Emergence
There is already evidence that Slack can work.
Donald knows four mainland learners who have successfully used it:
Cloud from Shenzhen — Mac
Ethan from Zhejiang — Mac
Albert from Zhejiang — Mac
Oliver from Northeast China — Windows
That last detail is particularly interesting. The problem cannot simply be explained as “Slack doesn't work for children in mainland China,” or even “Slack doesn't work on Windows.”
Leo's case is the only unsuccessful case Donald has encountered.
And there is another clue.
Cloud's Slack setup was not solved by Donald alone. That day, Cloud's dad, Jiang, spent about half an hour helping get it working. Donald still doesn't know exactly what Jiang did.
So the next attempt is not just another technical experiment.
It is a small investigation.
Can Qing find someone who remembers how they solved a similar problem? Can Jiang reconstruct what he did for Cloud? Can the second Gmail path succeed? Can a new piece of knowledge emerge from the network of developers around Leo's family?
Learning
Sometimes education begins by solving a problem that has nothing to do with the subject being taught.
Before Leo can learn through this channel, someone has to build the channel.
A communication tool can become educational infrastructure. A Slack workspace is not just an app: it can become the tunnel through which a learner's questions travel to a teacher, and through which experiments, code, mistakes, discoveries, and encouragement travel back.
But tunnels are not always already there.
Sometimes a wall appears between two people who want to learn together.
The first response is to try.
The second response is to try again.
And when the teacher reaches the limit of what he knows, learning itself becomes collaborative: ask another developer, ask a parent, ask the community, reconstruct what worked before, and search for a path nobody had considered yet.
