The Answer She Was Looking For

When a child learns to satisfy expectations, saying what she actually thinks can become surprisingly difficult.

After our last published exhibit, I kept thinking about something that happened during Enning's class.

She had rewritten the code from the previous lesson many times, on paper and on her Mac. I was happy to see her reviewing and practicing.

Then, while we were doing it again, I asked her about this tiny line:

let m = []

I didn't ask her to define an array or explain JavaScript syntax.

I asked a much simpler question:

“What job does this short line do?”

I had explained many times before that it was like a container—a box ready to hold numbers.

But she still couldn't describe it in simple Chinese.

What shocked me was that she could talk normally about other things. She wasn't struggling to use language.

She was struggling to use language to express her own understanding.

She tried hard to give me an answer.

But instead of saying the simple thing she had supposedly learned, she began searching for something complicated and “correct” to say.

At that moment, I realized she might not be asking herself:

“What do I understand?”

She might be asking:

“What answer am I supposed to give?”

Then I remembered another tiny moment from the same class.

Yesterday we had used the array name numBox. Today I asked her to use a different name, and she chose m.

Ten minutes later, when the problem became harder, her hand quietly went back to numBox.

I asked:

“Did you start rote learning?”

She paused, realized it, laughed, and changed it back to m.

The old habit had quietly taken over.

I began to see a pattern larger than programming.

A child can spend years learning how to meet other people's standards: finding the expected answer, using the expected words, and trying not to be wrong.

Language can become a tool for satisfying expectations rather than expressing one's own mind.

Then suddenly a teacher asks:

“What do YOU think this does?”

And the child discovers that producing an answer from her own understanding is a completely different skill.

This is what I want to help Enning build.

Not another collection of answers.

A habit of looking, thinking, testing, and then saying what she sees in her own words.

The goal is not to make Enning better at remembering what the teacher said.

It is to make her increasingly comfortable thinking when nobody has told her what to say.

If her answer is wrong, that's fine.

If it is awkward, that's fine.

If she says “I don't know,” that's fine.

The important thing is that the answer comes from her.

One day, when she sees

let m = []

I hope she doesn't search her memory for the expected explanation.

I hope she simply looks at it and says:

“It's an empty box. We're going to put numbers in it.”

Not because she memorized the sentence.

Because she understands it.

And because she knows she is free to say what she thinks.

What happens when a child discovers that her own thoughts—not the expected answers—are worth expressing?

Through hundreds of small moments of questioning, experimenting, making mistakes, noticing old habits, and trying again.

Because education should not only teach children to meet expectations. It should help them develop a mind they can freely express.
