The Fire Was Already There

A blanket, a runny nose, and a lesson about what teachers can—and cannot—give.

When Felix was in Grade 5, his mother sent me several messages one morning.

She wrote:

"He woke up at 6:45 this morning and started working on his homework."

A little later:

"Wrapped up in a blanket with a running nose."

And then another memory surfaced:

"It reminded me of when he was two years old, working on a pre-K workbook and refusing to go to bed."

These moments happened years apart.

Yet they seemed connected by the same invisible thread.

As teachers, we often ask:

How do we motivate students?

How do we inspire curiosity?

How do we create passion?

But Felix quietly suggested a different question.

What if some children arrive with the fire already burning?

The early-morning homework.

The toddler who refuses to stop learning.

The persistence that appears long before grades, competitions, or university applications.

Perhaps the task is not to ignite the fire.

Perhaps it is simply to recognize it.

Later, a stranger from the Netherlands read this small story and left a comment:

"It's amazing how early passion can shine through. Letting it flourish is key."

The sentence resonated deeply.

Not because it introduced a new idea.

But because it expressed, in a few words, something many teachers spend years learning.

Some children carry an internal motivation that cannot be assigned, rewarded, or manufactured.

It simply appears.

And when adults notice it, protect it, and provide opportunities for it to grow, remarkable things can happen.

Teachers often receive credit for creating motivation.

In reality, our role may be more modest—and more important.

We cannot give children their curiosity.

We cannot manufacture passion.

We cannot install persistence.

But we can:

recognize it,
nurture it,
protect it,
and help it flourish.

The fire was already there.

The teacher's task is simply to keep the wind at the right strength.

A child's passion for learning may begin long before formal education.

Careful observation allows teachers and parents to recognize and nurture existing motivation.

Education is not always about creating interest. Sometimes it is about protecting and encouraging what is already there.

We do not create the fire.

We notice it.

We shelter it.

And when we are fortunate, we watch it grow.
